Holiday Shopping Self Defense Tips

Image
You're just coming out of the store when you notice a man walking up from behind. He appears to have an envelope in his hand. You watch as he approaches and hands it to you before quickly turning around and walking away. What do you do? Disregarding your curiosity, what if you have a child with you? Situations like this are almost inevitable as the holidays approach, and many people often fall victim to those predators waiting for an opportune moment to rise. Tip 1 –  Be alert!  – Sounds simple right? It is no brainer, really; however, so many people are so preoccupied with their phones, personal appearance, and other distractions that they barely realize what ten feet in front of them is. Tip #2 –  Keep your luggage to a minimum –  if you're carrying many bags, then you might let it weigh you down. Predators are looking for easy prey. We recommend leaving behind the pocket diaper or the new laptop case to stay safe. If you are going on a shopping spree, bring...

Women’s Empowerment: Why you don’t need it.

Image
Today, I wanted to make a post about one of THE most common motifs in the  womens self defense classes /martial arts industry – Women’s Empowerment. It’s a nice enough message, and I can see the sincerity in wanting to help women become capable of protecting themselves – and as a result, become empowered. As a member of the female community, my major issue with this marketing angle is that it suggests women are lacking a quality of character which they can only gain through the type of training being offered. NEWS FLASH LADIES!! You. Are. Already. Empowered. I am not a feminist and don’t subscribe to any political labels, but as a person who happens to have female biology, I have NEVER identified as being unempowered, even when I felt at my lowest. I wasn’t someone who necessarily needed to be empowered. In hindsight, what I needed was to feel my power, to find the evidence of it, to reconnect/connect to it. This might be semantics to some, but in my opinion, it drastically ...

The 5 Most Common Attacks Women Face

Image
Women face a different kind of violence from men, and with it comes different problems. Let’s take a look at the 5 most commonly reported and documented attacks women face. I’ll give you some very basic tips you can implement in order to avoid and deal with these problems. *Disclaimer: physically training to defend yourself against these attacks is by far the most effective method to survive these problems. However, having knowledge of what to do and what not to do will increase your day-to-day safety by helping you make smarter choices.* 1. A HAIR GRAB AND DRAG Commonly, criminals will look for the easiest and most low-risk ways to carry out an attack on a person. For women especially, it is simple for an attacker to take advantage of hair, especially if it’s tied up and easy to grab. The attacker can come approach fairly unnoticed from behind and before you realise what’s going on they can have a good grip on you and take you to the ground or a second location. What can you do...

Self-Defense Strategies Every Woman Should Know

Image
The best self-defense strategies and techniques work equally well for women and men, but let's face it: Women need to know them because they're assaulted more often than men. Statistics indicate that one in three women will be the victim of some violent attack in her lifetime. Women also endure more situations involving sexual harassment as well as verbal harassment. Although most women's self-defense courses focus on skills for quickly and efficiently destroying an attacker, self-defense training also should include methods for preventing a confrontation from turning physical in the first place. Learning how to steer away from a threat may not sound as exciting as ripping out an attacker's heart, but as they say in every beginner's class, evading an attack is almost always better than blocking an attack if you stick with strategies and simple gross-motor-movement techniques- as they are described here.  TRUST YOUR INSTINCTS Many women join a self-defense class af...

Should Women Train Self Defense Differently To Men?

Image
It's important to learn self-defense and if a women is somehow taught differently, then can protect herself and cope up with real-life violence. She will get the right sense of confidence which means she will be prepared for all real crises.  The Myth Of "ONE SIZE FITS ALL" Instructors out there like to boast that their female students are as tough as the males. It's a pride moment of all instructors how much of a beating their ladies can take, and often the ladies cry, bleed, broken but they can't quit mentally. What’s more, they view this as a requirement, a condition for acceptance, that applies to anyone who wants to become part of their tribe or be accepted into their little coterie .   Ignorance on this scale says nothing about the student, but everything about the instructor. Any instructor who intentionally beats on a beginner is a bully, plain and simple. Not only this, pitifully ignorant is what coaching actually means and actually shouldn’t be teaching ...

Do self-defense for adults classes need to differ for men and women?

Image
There is too much discussion and debate about one common question:  do women need to train in Krav Maga differently than men? However, the shortest answer to this is yes. The rationale behind the answer is that women face different real-life violent experiences and situations than men. This places much impact on the fact that women should be placed and equipped with techniques and tools that can effectively be applied against those threats specifically.  On the other hand, there is also another school of thought that runs simultaneously to this one. Here, people tend to think that training for Krav Maga shouldn’t be different for men and women. The reason being that  self-defense for adults  is still self-defense, whereas crime is still a crime. There is no difference when it comes to facing violence. Most of the women’s self-defense classes will have much gentle implications of the curriculum so that they can learn how to cope up with the violence. In this ca...
